The first thing you notice is the mystery. There's mystery in the saxophone of Jure Pukl: here startling you with surgically precise, casual clarity, elsewhere careening across the sonic landscape in a warm, microtonal spiral. There is mystery in his compositions: uncompromising, sometimes bright but often brutal, rhythmically driving and richly chromatic: intensely ordered, yet with a core of burning intensity. And mystery is in abundance in the stunning prowess and resourcefulness of the young ensemble performing Mr. Pukl's intricate music: the listener is invited to wonder, "How did this happen?"
This album is a haunting and beautiful achievement from Jure Pukl, an uncommon young artist with an original vision for modern music. His compositions are not just pretty songs; they are ideas, ready to be unpacked in performance. You hear shades of Steve Coleman and Gary Thomas, Wayne Shorter and Sam Rivers, Andrew Hill and Eric Dolphy. Or to say it another way, you hear lines and shapes, weight and depth, order and its opposite.
Sometime ago, my colleague and fellow keyboardist James Hurt used to say about certain musicians: "S/he knows." The universe became divided between those who possess knowledge about the hidden order of things, and those who have yet to learn. Jure Pukl is one of those rare beings whose music reflects a higher understanding at a young age. And with this album, he has created a listening experience with something to teach us all. He knows.
